Sound Avenue opens the month of February by showcasing new interpretations of Madloch and Subnode's 'Journey to the Unknown'. Released in October of last year, the track's subdued pulse and smoky resonance anchored the double a-side release and now sits as a highlight in the duo's discography. Supported by deep, organic and progressive house DJs alike, Sound Avenue now looks to bring new life to the track by inviting Haen, Circulation and Gux Jimenez to re-imagine it for 2023's winter season.
Making his label debut with the first interpretation of 'Journey to the Unknown' is Haen. Perhaps better known as Sachin Menon, the Indian artist created 'HAEN' as a moniker to further explore electronic music, fusing warm tones and atmospheres with experimental elements and sounds inspired from a broad spectrum of musical genres. Juicebox Music, Mango Alley and Songspire have all been vehicles for HAEN's transcendent sound, while the underground's tastemakers have also chimed in with support. Now continuing his upwards trajectory, HAEN makes his Sound Avenue debut with a prophetic rendition of 'Journey to the Unknown'. While maintaining the elusive spirit of the original, the Indian artist crafts a sweeping sonic experience all his own, a tense yet emotive journey into a futuristic hinterland, where broken beats, haunted vocal phrasing and pyrotechnic designs emerge from their tightly knit architecture, onwards to a finale of corrosive beauty and mesmerizing machine funk.
Also making his label debut and providing the second interpretation of 'Journey to the Unknown' is Circulation. With a career that spans well over two decades, Circulation is one of electronic music's most storied production acts. Operating as a duo initially, the British production team were perhaps best known for their iconic series of colour-related dancefloor bangers which earned play and support from electronic luminaries John Digweed, Laurent Garnier and Sasha. Inactive for close to twenty years following their final release in the mid-2000's, founding member Paul Davis revitalized the moniker in 2021 with a series of John Digweed supported releases via his new Recirculate imprint. Now, following a four-track showcase via Bedrock Records, Circulation makes his Sound Avenue debut with a gorgeous take on 'Journey to the Unknown'. Rather than burst into a dancefloor whirlwind or electronic symphony, Circulation's remodel evokes its emotions through slow burn repetition, dodging expectations and emphasizing its conceptual charm, painting dystopian scenes of solitude along the journey; while floor-shaking grooves, hypnagogic effects and retro drum fills unveil a semi-conscious dreamland, before Circulation's experimental attitude reveals itself during a second act of mesmerizing harmonic progression.
The release concludes with Gux Jimenez making his label debut with the third and final interpretation of 'Journey to the Unknown'. Hailing from Colombia, Gux Jimenez has been a fixture of his country's electronic music movement for over a decade. Best known for his emotive take on the progressive genre, the Cartagena resident has showcased his music via trendsetting landing spots such as Clubsonica, Juicebox, Mango Alley, Proton's Particles, UV and his own OzLand imprint, while earning support from world class DJs Above and Beyond and Armin Van Buuren. Now, adding Sound Avenue to his resume, Gux debuts on the label with a nostalgic rendition of 'Journey to the Unknown'. Built around a thumping percussive framework, Gux focuses on rhythm and groove across the first act, nicely balanced with a healthy dose of colourful effects and arpeggiated sequences. Looking to bring greater emotional depth, the main break unveils balmy overlays, delicately blanketing prismatic arps, as modulation peaks for an uplifting finale.
